About
Sean Barnard
Sean recently served as the first Chief Operating Officer for Smiles Ahead, a 5-brand, multi-disciplined group of Orthodontic, Pediatric and General dental offices throughout North Carolina. Dr. Jack Burrow III, DDS, MS and the partners of Burrow, Welchel and Culp PLLC recruited and charged Sean with the successful creation of a positive internal culture for legacy and new offices, building a retention program and defining a qualified leadership team.
Dr. Jack later told Sean “I should have hired you years ago…you have managed to do in 2 years what I thought would take ten.”
His international career spans over 40 years in Europe, the Caribbean, and the United States. He has helped owners, teams and clients develop the ability to become better leaders, who create better places to work. Starting his gaming career as a dealer of roulette in England in 1979, he moved into junior management before making the decision to grasp a rare opportunity and move to Paradise Island, in the Bahamas.
In 1991, Sean was identified as the best candidate to join a management team responsible for opening open one of the first (riverboat) casinos outside of Nevada and New Jersey. The company sponsored his immigration and he updated his citizenship in 1999. His prestigious casino career has lasted 40 years, and he continues to guide multiple former colleagues he has met along the way. Sean enjoys breaking the ‘norms’ of how leaders become great leaders by simply cutting through the noise, doing what’s right, regardless of anyone’s position title or tenure.
In 2016, Dr. Dustin Burleson, DDS, MBA, the founder of Burleson Seminars, introduced Sean to his international clients which lead to the creation of Sean Barnard Consulting (formerly Fifty Eight LLC). The consultancy grew in reputation and size with a variety of clients across the U.S. In 2022, Sean took a two-year sabbatical and joined Smiles Ahead before returning to his first love: consulting clients in need of his expertise.

The ‘Why’ Behind Intentional Retention
After several decades in a wide variety of leadership roles, Sean Barnard has witnessed the demise of the investment business owners make in their teams. Entry, mid-level, and even experienced managers are usually promoted with a nod of a job well done, an increase in pay, and the opportunity to fail miserably.
The profit margins of any business are primarily affected by the low or high cost of labor. This equates to somewhere between getting what you pay for or bankruptcy. We have reduced the number of directors and managers and forced talented people to serve in two roles at once. All topped off with a remarkable lack of training.
Sean’s best-selling book provides owners and leaders at every level with THE essential guide for success. Intentional Retention is an essential tool that leaders use as a timeless resource to create a healthy and positive workplace culture. It serves to build trust and a guiding light to what effective leadership is really all about.

A – AAn Inspiring and Engaging Nonfiction Book on Leadership…A Must-Read! Read More
This was a fantastic blend of memoir-style storytelling and guided education on management and leadership skills in the modern world. The importance of taking the time to learn how to speak with your employees or your team members in our modern world not because it is required, but because it is the right thing to do becomes a cornerstone early on in the author’s book was truly moving to read about, as it sets the tone for the author’s experiences and lessons immediately.
To me, the author really was able to cover a wide range of topics under the banner of leadership. From establishing excellent communication early on to determining one’s core values and even the recruitment process, the book does a great job of detailing and showcasing each step easily. The balance of personal storytelling and education that each chapter boasts was a helpful tool in relating to the reader and showcasing how leaders can always grow and learn themselves as time goes on.

Leaders want to be the best version of themselves and retain team members who genuinely want to be a part of a success story. How they recruit is only the beginning of a long journey that is often cut short by simply not knowing – what they don’t know. Leadership is an art that can be learned – where internal conflict can be navigated without losing sleep.
This motivating keynote address centered around a 40 year journey that took me from behind the scenes pressing shirts at a dry cleaner shop in England to running a $250m revenue gaming resort with over 1500 team members in Kansas City and on to taking the role of COO for a privately held dental group in Charlotte, North Carolina.
I share with an audience how the victories of many opportunities lead to success and the incredibly painful blunders that had me tripping over my own feet along the way.
Attendees leave with invaluable lessons of a self made C-Suite executive, and the keys to becoming the best leaders in their fields.
